Program on Ontologies of Neural Structures

The 1st INCF Workshop on Neuroanatomical Nomenclature and Taxonomy presented a clear basis for targeted INCF actions. Accordingly, Program on Ontologies of Neural Structures (PONS) has been launched.

Focusing on the neuroinformatics aspects, PONS aims to establish a platform for translation and clarification of terminologies and indexing, with an emphasis on cross mapping and comparison of terminologies. The long-term goal is to provide useful and practical means for facilitation of data sharing and reuse of data across research disciplines. This program is closely linked to the INCF Program on Digital Atlasing but endeavours at reaching out to all areas of neuroscience, given the fact that ontologies of neural structures represent a foundation for communication across multiple levels of investigation.
